Oakmont Parent Night Shows Catapult Building Process

Monday, August 29th, 2011

Steve Dicus at Oakmont High School had 40 families drop in this evening to learn more about the Tech-Explorer Catapult project their students were building this week in his engineering and design classes. They saw the mills, lathes and other equipment students use to fabricate parts and build catapults.

During the evening, the Sierra College STEM team members explained the goal of the Sierra STEM/National Science Foundation Tech-Explorer project — to attract more students to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math careers with an engaging hands-on project. Students and parents also received information about many Sierra College programs including Engineering, Mechatronics, Energy Technology, Engineering Support Technology and others.

NYT Op-ed: How to Fix Our Math Education

Friday, August 26th, 2011

The New York Times published an Op-Ed by Sol Garfunkel and David Mumford on August 24, 2011, “How to Fix Our Math Education.”

It suggests that that the current way we teach math does not prepare students as well as it could for a variety of careers and personal needs. Teaching math in context may have more value, according to the authors: “… most citizens would be better served by studying how mortgages are priced, how computers are programmed and how the statistical results of a medical trial are to be understood.”

They recommend making math more relevant. “A math curriculum that focused on real-life problems would still expose students to the abstract tools of mathematics.”

In addition, they suggest that the typical classes taught today be organized by how the math applies. “Imagine replacing the sequence of algebra, geometry and calculus with a sequence of finance, data and basic engineering.”

Geometry & Construction at Roseville High School

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Jeff Bailey measures room with students to apply area formula to buying carpet

Tyson Maytanes (Geometry) and Jeff Bailey (Industrial Technology) are co-teaching Geometry in Construction at Roseville High School. On the third day of class, students were learning basic geometric shapes and how to calculate the area of those shapes. As they learned a new formula, it was immediately applied. For instance, the students used a tape measure to determine the dimensions of the classroom and calculated the area to determine how many square feet of carpet would be needed to cover it. They then converted it to square yards. When discussing triangles, they learned about the triangle between the sink, stove and refrigerator in the kitchen.

Working with community partners, the Roseville High School instructors are bringing geometry alive by applying it to building a modular house over the course of the semester. They are seeking donations of construction materials and tools to build the first house. The goal is to make the program self-sustaining by selling the home each year. Learn more at http://rhsgeometryinconstruction.org/.
